Donations of drawings & sketches are kindly requested from Artists of the life drawing class and the dublin sketchers group, past and present, and will be exhibited and sold/auctioned at a minimum price to raise funds for barnardos. Hi folks, just to let you know this new life drawing session has started up. It's obviously not as packed a class as evenings. In fact they need more people to attend to keep it running, so if you're tired of overcrowded drawing sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday night and are able to attend Friday mornings this might suit. Hi folks and sorry for the no notice on this everyone but if anyone is interested and they have a couple of life drawings/paintings/pottery/sculpture/ a story/ experience written down/whatever to do with the Trinity Arts Workshop 191 Pearse Street Studios that they would like to submit for the 50 years of TAW Culture Night exhibition, they are accepting pieces for consideration (space considerations mostly) today Friday 10th September between 10am and 5.30pm.

Artist talk on Thursday 12th January at 8:30 in the life drawing studio on 191 Pearse st.

Fergus Byrne will give a slideshow presentation of his work talk this Thursday after life drawing class. Fergus works in visual and performance art and his recent practice explores the relationship between drawing and the moving body, drawing reference from dance, martial arts and Baroque sculpture. He is currently undertaking an aritist's residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Life Painting on Saturday - Course outline

The course will continue and develop students individual painting language, be it figurative or abstract, always exploring the historical and contemporary
context of the work. Built into each project is an emphasis on drawing
as drawing is essential to the project base. Projects derive from figure
and portrait study. The HUMAN FIGURE can be interpreted in traditional or
abstract applications and terms. Students will have critical insight by
way of imaginative flexibility to technical expertise. This will inform
the full understanding of art both past and present.

WEEK, 1 TO 10 -Project from LIFE.

Structuring the surface of a series of drawings and a
painting related to that drawing to give expression to the spatial
tensions brought about by the sensation of colour, line and shape.

The representation of the human form from life model.

Series of portrait drawings from life of self and friends in a choice of media.

Drawings of self and people from memory, interpret individual stories in own artistic
voice.

Familiar images of personal choice in students choice of media.
Task to show personal development in space and composition with sketches
and notes on ideas and concepts.

Culmination Project of all contents of course showing individual and group learning promoting attitudes of inquiry, curiosity and vigour in drawing and painting the figure.
Students will have attained a more independent motivated artistic
identity. This will produce a highly energised atmosphere and work of
considerable individual distinction.

Students shall determine their own area of research in consultation with the tutor. Students will be challenged to see their work in a critical way and to be informed of
alternative points of view in contemporary art.

In connection with the Trinity Arts Festival our annual Life Drawing Marathon will be held on the 9th Feburary from 11-4
in the Life Drawing Studio at 191 Pearse st. With four models over four hours, this is free event and always generates great energy and interest.
Come and be inspired by the beauty and challenge of the human body - strictly no plastination!
An exhibition of drawings made on the day will be held in the Atrium as part of the opening reception of the Trinity Arts Festival.
Throughout the week TAW will be offering free evening Ceramics classes, just bring your student card along - a perfect opportunity to try your hand at throwing a pot,
to experience the sensual delights of cool wet clay or simply to discover the whereabouts of our Pottery in Arch 8, Goldsmith Hall.

In other excitements, Life painting on Saturday afternoons (from 2 to 5) is back.
This Saturday will be ink painting, working on an long pose in natural light.
An intensive 10 week course with Ken Donfield will be starting the third Saturday in February (Please see course description enclosed).

On the competition front, we have an Art Attack intervarsity tournament coming up organised by DCU Art society.
TCD will be battling it out with NUIG, NUIM, NCAD and DCU in the Venue in DCU on the 27th of March.
We need two teams (with four people to each team) and one judge (who won't compete in the competition)

So how do you play? Well each team, side by side, has 15 minutes to create a giant image from the materials available.
The judges will choose a winner based on its intrinsic artistic value or whichever one they decide looks nicer.

Challenging Stereotypes Creative Competition 09

The competition is open to photographic, art, mixed-media and text entries.
Deadline for submissions is 20 March.

Stereotypes are the focus of this campaign due to the link that exists
between stereotyping and inequalities experienced by groups; in terms of how
they are treated by society and their recognition or status in society. This
competition creates a medium for the visible expression of College diversity
and will raise awareness on how stereotypes can lead to assumptions and
sometimes discrimination.

There will be opportunities to attend photographic and art workshops for

Life Drawing last night

Last night I was playing around with using either my left arm/hand to do a couple of drawings and then swapping and using my right side, and sometimes both at the same time. The third one I started blind which really helped to loosen me up.

I liked Fergus's teaching style - and some of the points he made were good. Like, approaching your drawing like drawing a tree rather than trying to create a person; varying the marks on the page; not trying to create a human form, instead just letting shape and form build on the page. I also liked what he said about how he uses his sketch book in the studio - just how every drawing that you do "feeds into" all future drawing. Also about not trying to draw the drawing that has been seen a thousand times in Life Drawing sessions, rather to try to let yourself come alive in your work.

You will need to bring your own materials for next week the 14th November. Colours that were suggested for the next painting session... Daler Rowney, Windsor and Newton, Performa Acrylics; Primaries; Blue, Yellow, Red, Earth colours Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow ochre, black and white. Try to get reasonable quality paintbrushes, perhaps some of the following types

Long Flat or Bright: 1/8th inch, 3/8th inch, 3/4 inch. (Good all rounder)
Round: 1/8 inch,
Filbert: 3/8 inch, 3/4 inch.
Rigger: Nylon No.1 or 2 (for more detailed work)
Fan Brush: 1 inch (Hog Bristle)
The most expensive of these sable brushes is hand-set in a seamless ferrule.
Next in the chain are the blends of sable and synthetic.
Natural black and white boar bristle brushes are the backbone of brushes for most acrylic painters.

Also bring your own landscape image for next fridays lesson.

Kenneth Donfield. NCAD. Lecturer in drawing and painting. THE HUMAN FIGURE.

Students for this course should have at least a rudimentary knowledge of drawing. This course will allow for sustained perceptual concentration,with freedom to experiment and revise.The course begins with a series of studies,using a variety of poses, Exploring tone, light, space, composition and pictorial structure.

Students shall be encouraged to work in a broad and diverse manner. There shall be slide shows of figurative artists from past to present.There will also be group discussions and critiques.

All media from pencil,charcoal, pastel, oil paint and mixed media may be explored. Technical support and instruction will be given on materials,their values,properties and how to apply these to a surface. Through observation and understanding of the many contemporary approaches to working from the human figure, students will enhance their ability and knowledge of working in the life studio. OCT. 2008

Life Drawings in Pastel - Abstract shapes to figurative - figure and surrounding environment - colour used expressively to convey mood, temperature, sculpturally,i.e. to define muscular planes of the body - tonality - light colours dark colours, colour contrasts. this term the taught class is on Tuesdays
the course is offered by Kenneth Donfield, a lecturer in drawing and painting NCAD.

Course outline for

Introduction to Acrylic Painting

Course Duration: Every Friday for the next 6 Weeks (Nov. 7th - Dec 12th.)

When: 7pm - 9pm

Where: 191 Pearse St.

ACRYLIC PAINTING : COURSE OUTLINE

WEEK 1: Slide Show. Discussing various artists and their techniques. (TBC)

Materials. Discussion on the materials used and needed to begin painting.

Initial steps of painting set-up.

WEEK 2: Colour & Tone.

This week we will practice mixing colour, and begin to understand the vast amount of

variations that can be achieved. We will look at colour within shadows and colour in full light.

What is colour and where does it come from?

WEEK 3: Replicate a Painting.

Over the following weeks each person will select a painting or photograph of their choice to study and attempt to copy,

while continuing to look at various techniques each week.

This week we will focus on brushwork, composition, and the initial sketch.

WEEK 4: In this class we will introduce some more techniques which are slightly more complicated, attained through the use of

different brushes and varying amounts of water added to your paint.

The techniques are: Scumbling, Glazing, Dry-Brushing, and working opaque.

WEEK 5: This Class will give you the chance to branch out if you like and take on a more challenging project. It's up to you.

WEEK 6: As this is the final class of the course we will concentrate on the finishing of pictures.

The little things that can make the difference, and on how to varnish your piece if you wish.

Its short notice but Aodhan will be hosting a party tomorrow evening probably kicking off after seven and all of the life drawers and TAW folks are invited to enjoy it. There will be music but if you play an instrument bring it along. Some food and refreshments will be provided. Help in the form of tidying the studio would be appreciated show up at six thirty to halp in Studio 191 Pearse Street - the usual spot where life drawing takes place.

Hi guys, welcome to the beginning of a new season of Art and Art-like activities! This year we have a new secretary in the affable and capable John, he'll be taking up my duties for the new year. I will be our new Treasurer and Aodhan will be staying on as our capable and talented Chair.

I think this year will be bigger and better than last year, and if we can manage to pull it off we have a few nice ideas for events during the year too!

And now, as this is an art blog (and to prove I have a few artistic bones in the science student's body of mine) I'd like to share a piece I made for a friend of mine over the summer.

Two surprises first evening back, a new tutor, Ken and a new life model, Jay, a very warm welcome to you both. Ken asked us to try to go from abstract shapes to realism. Plus to consider the light and shade effect to describe volume within the firgure using cross hatching.
Pencil and graphite on cartridge paper.
First time we got some homework too - a self portrait - should be fun to see all the results. As usual a few of us went for coffee, or a beer, this time in the Long Stone for a bit of an unwind and friendly exchange of ideas. Just to remind you all are welcome to come along and anyone ca suggest a spot at the end of a drawing session.

I'm very happy...
